Seven Reasons to Finish Your College Education as a Non-Traditional Student

It's Never Too Late to Obtain a College Degree

Barb Webb
Maybe you dropped out of college for financial reasons, to start a family, or just because the timing was off. Now, your 30s, 40s, 50s... maybe even 80s have passed by but the urge to finish your college education has not diminished.

Here are seven good reasons you should pay attention to your "inner voice" and return to college to pick up where you left off.

To Stave Off Alzheimer's. Research shows that when we actively use our brains for memory retention and learning, it may help reduce memory problems when we are older. Challenge yourself to use your maximum brain power by returning to college and finishing your degree. (Of course, diet, exercise, and genetics are factors, too, but it certainly helps increase your memory powers to actively use them!)

To Boost Your Self-Esteem. Accomplish your goals and your level of confidence will get a boost, too. Things as simple as getting an A on your first college exam, after your return to school, can bolster your general, over-all well-being and self-confidence in other areas of your life.

To Qualify for Special Funding. As an adult, you may qualify for non-traditional student grants and loans. There are a variety of awards and funding opportunities for adult learners. Check with your local university to find out what your state has to offer for displaced homemakers or non-traditional students in terms of college funding.

To Increase Your Job Knowledge. Employers value employees who are knowledgeable. Stay competitive in the workplace by returning to college and obtaining a degree in an area of expertise that is relational to your career.

Or, perhaps you've had your eye on a promotion, but haven't been able to convince management to give you a shot. Obtaining a degree in your chosen field will add a great deal of credibility to your resume and will show your employer that you have taken the initiative to prepare yourself for the next level.

To Succeed. If college wasn't right for you in your youth, it may be now. Adult learners often have an easier time in the college learning environment. Past experiences and the wisdom that only comes with age can be powerful allies to have in your tool kit. It's easier to retain and "get" the information presented in lectures when you have real world knowledge to relate.

To Help You Change Careers. If you feel at a dead-end with your current job or are simply ready for a change in your work scenery, returning to college to finish your degree will help give you the tool-set you need to make a career change.

To Set a Good Example. Remember the age-old saying, "Finish what you started?" Returning to college as a non-traditional student is a great example to set for your children, friends, and family. Show the world it's never too late to accomplish a goal and achieve your dreams!
