1. The main tip I have to offer to you is try, if at all possible, to get rid of things you do not need. Why waste time and money to move items you know you will never use again. Hold a garage sale to try and sell all the items you do not want to keep. If you still have items that you do not want to move either throw them away or give them away, your choice.
2. If you are going to be hiring a moving company you should make the reservation as early as possible. Try to find a reliable moving company, last time I moved some of my stuff was taken. If you are not going to use a moving company then you should rent a moving van to help move your items, it is a much easier way to do it rather than using cars or trucks.
3. You should pack a box of essential items, and keep it at either the front of the moving van or in your car. This will be important when you arrive. You should pack toilet paper, soap, paper plates, etc.
4. Lists are a key to having a successful move. You should create a list of all the items that are in boxes, what you need to put into the moving van and what you need to put into your car, etc. Lists will be a life saver come moving day.
5. Make sure to get all items packed early. I would suggest packing all items up a day before the move, except for items you will need the night before the move or the day of the move. This will help you to be organized and prepared on moving day rather than panicking trying to find boxes and other items.
6. You should definitely check the weather for the area you are living in and the area you are moving to. The weather may be good where you live now but the place where you are moving to could have a blizzard going on. Check the weather and you will have a comfortable move.
7. My final advice would be to tell your family and friends of your new address and phone number. Many family members and friends like to check in on the new house or call to make sure everything is going ok, informing them of the new address and phone number will allow them to do this.
That is just seven tips I have found helpful in the past when moving.
