1. Learn how to manage yourself first. Leadership is a large part of management, and there is no better way to earn respect from peers and colleagues when you can set an example. Stick to your word, exemplify follow through, and stay self-motivated to be in a state of constant improvement. The energy you put into this area will show in different areas of your life; other people will pick it up!
2. Become a master at managing finances. You don't have to be the accountant to learn what it takes to manage the books; learning the basics about revenue and expenses will help you create better and more consistent goals in the long term. Find out how to read financial statements, and set realistic goals and expectations for the financial components of the company.
3. Learn to communicate. Communication is a broad subject, but it involves extensive listening and speaking skills. When you become a better communicator, you can get your point across with ease, fluidity, and power. People are more likely to listen and be motivated by somebody who can influence the situation; communication also involves listening and learning to be a critical thinker. Combine all of these traits, and you will become a better communicator.
4. Learn the art of leadership. Leadership comes from within, and empowering others will help you influence and direct people in a positive way. You'll need to set aside your needs once in a while to truly understand what this means; improving others by team building, managing chaos, and learning how to delegate are all parts of becoming a leader.
5. Ethics. Integrity in your actions and words will earn you respect; when you know how to deal with people with respect, whether this is in personal or business relationships, you will be able to make better decisions and avoid mistakes that may lead to problems. Encouraging this in others will also help you build a strong company and team. Encourage ethics in your workplace, and you'll set a higher standard.
6. Have a sense of humor. Getting wrapped up in the daily stresses of your work and life won't help you stay connected to those around you. Instead of alienating your team as you struggle with your workload, inject some humor into the environment! Productivity is easily improved with this easy step. Funny quotes, pictures, and jokes of the day are easy ways to lighten up a little.
7. Avoid micromanagement drama. If you can work up the courage to become a leader, micromanaging won't even be a choice. Leadership involves working with at team, bringing out the best in others, and encouraging growth. Micromanagement may work in the short term, but often leaves people anxious, unmotivated, and less likely to listen to you in the future. Learn how to gauge people's strengths and weaknesses, and fine-tune your projects by delegating; with patience, you'll start to bring out the best work from your entire team!
Management is a skill and takes time to develop and learn; it embodies many aspects of team building and people skills, but also gives you room to become a great communicator and overseer of business operations.
