Seven Ways to Unclutter Your Life

Putting Common Sense to Use

David Yuen
Clutter. No one wants clutter in their life. And even though some may learn to "live" with it and cope, clutter is a thing that hardly anyone enjoys. So there in lies the question--how can people get rid of clutter from their lives? Here are seven ways.

Clean Your Space

To unclutter the world within, the best place to start is to unclutter the world without. Sounds a little Zen, but just as this writer has struggled with this task for the longest time and finally got it done, you could get it done too. And when it's done, it makes a whole world of difference. Plus, it makes living each day a little easier. Everyone can use a cleaner room, workspace, or office. Why not you?

Make a List of Priorities

It doesn't have to be long. But it should be something that you take time to think about. Write down, one at a time, a few goals to set for yourself. Cleaning your room or workspace could even be one of them. When you gather your priorities into a list that you can see in front of you, life becomes a little neater.

Take a Break

Sometimes all we need is some time to ourselves. A "time out" just for the sake of relaxing and taking a step back to gather ourselves is an invaluable option. If things are going insane around you, there's nothing like a breather to put a little sanity where it's lacking.

Reschedule When Possible

If your calendar is too cluttered, it won't kill you to reschedule certain things, especially if their flexible. For instance, pushing back a dental check up to free up some time for other things won't kill you, unless it's major surgery. All it takes is a phone call. So why stress out about something that you can easily change?

Get Healthier Habits

Sometimes it's low energy levels that make our lives more cluttered rather than poor time management. So, if you feel that you don't have the energy to run the race, learn how to rest in between strides. Get more sleep. Make curfews for yourself. Are eating habits not working for you? Eat healthier. Get exercise. Cause a little bit goes a long way.

Make an Efficiency List

Certain companies have "efficiency experts" to point out inefficiencies in the corporate routine. So there's no reason why you can't be an "efficiency expert" in your own life. Make a list of the things that waste time in your routine. Take some time to think about it. Then, next to each item, write a solution.

Rev Up the Research

If you're reading this article, you may already have this down. But for those of you who haven't considered going any further than this article or casual browsing, this is something you need to at least try. All throughout the web are countless sites and articles (just like this one) solely devoted to taking the clutter out of people's lives. And looking through these resources to do more serious "unclutter research" is always beneficial. Just remember to avoid information overload by taking only what you need and leaving the rest behind. Two excellent sites to start off with include Lifehacker.com and Unclutterer.com.
