The news of more DC gallery closings is spreading. Lenny Campello confirmed the rumors on his blog, Daily Campello Art News on Tuesday. Two Dupont Circle galleries, Kathleen Ewing Gallery and Jane Haslem Gallery have both decided to close their doors.

With both Ewing and Haslem departing Dupont Circle, the area once flooded with galleries is becoming sparser and sparser. It's true that First Friday gallery walks have increased in mileage as galleries are spread farther apart.

This comes at a time when Zenith Gallery in Gallery Place is running its closing sale and Randall Scott Gallery on 14th Street NW has announced a move to Brooklyn New York. Even worse, both Kathleen Ewing and Randall Scott focused on the medium of photography, and there is a question as to where photographers will have a platform for showing their work in their future, besides juried competitions.

The bright side of the closures? None of these gallerists are giving up their work completely. Ewing will move her business to her home in Cleveland Park, but on a much smaller scale, and Jane Haslem will continue with work she began years ago with www.artline.com. Zenith Gallery owner Margery E. Goldberg will turn her focus to expanding the programs of her Zenith Community Arts Foundation.

One more down side though: Has anyone seen these two recent closings in the Post yet? It would be sad to see it covered only in local blogs and news forums. See: Dcist, Painterly Visions
