A Look at Several Means of Distributing a Short Film

Distributing a short film can be very difficult at times, as the marketplace and the overall reach of the film can be fairly limited. However, there are several ways to get a short film viewed by a wide audience.

First, utilize as many online sources for your short film as possible. What exactly does this entail? Use social networking sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, and others, to promote your content. In addition, use social bookmarking sites like Digg and Del.icio.us to get content delivered to a wide variety of viewers and high search engine placement.

If you have your own blog, it can be a very helpful tool to help distribute your short film as well. Link small parts of your short film back to your blog so if users like your content, they will return to your website in the future. Also, it definitely helps to have an RSS feed on your website, so you can notify viewers who previously enjoyed your content that you have new content up and ready for their viewing and comments.

The internet can be a great tool for acquiring fans and getting attention to your film. However, there are several means that a short film developer can take to get his/her film out to even more individuals on an offline scale.

Once you figure out your target audience, look for places where you can best advertise or promote your content to a given group. For instance, if you believe your film would be popular among a college-aged generation, you could try to advertise your short film in the school newspaper or on bulletin boards. You could also create flyers advertising your short film with a link to the website, and hand these out on the actual college campus.

Film festivals can also be a great way to distribute your content and get recognized for your hard work. Festivals are usually a lot of fun and can become big draws for fans and followers of your current and future content. Look for film festivals going on around your area (there isn't a real reason to travel very far for these, unless you live in a rural area). Many film festivals also have contests and awards for the best films, so if your film ends up winning an award, you can reap the benefits of a prize or an increased audience.

Good luck in distributing your short film! A little work and promotion can bring your short film a long way.
