Severe Clear

A 9/11 Remembrance

Mike Powers

Morning breaks, the
Air feels cool, the
Sun shines bright in
Cobalt blue, the
Sky so sharp and
Crisp and clear, the
Pilots call it
Severe clear...

This ugly scar, so
Hard to heal, this
Gaping void still
Seems so real, it
Marks the spot where
Once they stood and
Reached up to the
Sky so clear, the
Pilots call it
Severe clear...

This smoky column
Rises high, it
Chokes the lungs, it
Burns the eyes, it
Blots the sun, it
Casts a pall, it
Leaves a shadow, it
Darkens all, and...

Ashes fall like
Morning rain, they
Soak the earth with
Searing pain, and
Souls rise up and
Tears fall down where
Steel and glass lie
On the ground...

Years have come and
Then flown by, our
Wars have raged, our
Foes have died, but
Still there's just an
Empty sky, a
Sky so clear, the
Pilots call it
Severe clear...

This really captures the sense of loss we feel and that with the clear blue sky it is unthinkable that such a tragedy could have unfolded. Each day, little do we know what lies ahead. rcj

Good 9/11 poetic tribute. :-) I loved the lines " the sun shines bright in the cobalt blue." I remember how bright the blue sky was that day. Great work!

Mike, this tugs at my heart. I remember that day like it was yesterday! Words cannot express how I felt that day or for many days and months and years after. Our country lost a lot that day. One of the things that was taken from all of us was our security. Now we have to be watchful every single day. My heart still bleeds for all the families that lost love ones. A true tragedy.

Very emotional and the pictures are well-matched to your poem.
