Severe Thunderstorms Cause Flash Floods in Jackson Tennessee

Z.J. Ascensio
Storms are ravaging the Jackson, Tennessee, and surrounding area this morning. A severe storm system that entered the region last night and remains there at this time has produced a deluge that has flooded several areas of Madison County, including the Jackson downtown. The nearby counties of Tipton and Gibson are also experiencing major flash flooding with roadways submerged beneath over four feet of water in some places.

Aside from several major road closings in Jackson, the power still hasn't been restored to key operations including the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Though it is running on a backup generator, many people who rely on the hospital for treatments such as dialysis will not be able to receive them today. The power restoration has been hampered by heavy rain and wet conditions according to the Jackson Sun.

Because of the flooded conditions, a sinkhole has opened up on Forest Avenue between Edenwood and Summar. This is a photo provided by WBBJ-TV out of Jackson, Tennessee. Sinkholes occur from soil loss beneath the surface due extremes in precipitation. It's frightening and can cause costly damage.

On the positive side, as of my writing this, there has yet to be reports of any severe tornado damage. This is often the storm event that causes the most fear and damage in the area and was predicted to have the potential for development last night. A tornado watch remains in effect for all of West Tennessee and Northern Mississippi until 4 pm today, however.

To those living in the Jackson, Tennessee area, please stay inside today. If you are driving, do not attempt to drive through the flooded areas. Just because it looks to be a small amount of water doesn't mean it actually is. Don't risk your life by crossing a road. Turn around and wait.

We left for the weekend, and didn't see the news. I was shocked when we returned, and seen the damage the flooding had done to Tennessee. It's absolutely horrible.

Well reported. It's that time of year in the Midwest isn't it! Tornadoes are scary, and the tremendous electric storms that you get over there are something that most people in the UK have never experienced.

Scary weather! I hope it doesn't get any worse! Great reporting!
