Sew a Beach Bag Tote from a Towel

Summer sun beckons families to the beach for fun and relaxation. Time to load up the kids and all the sunblock, sand toys, towels, snacks, water, wallets, change of clothes and everything else you need to visit the ocean. Going to the beach with your family requires a lot of stuff, and you need a sturdy and stylish way to carry it all. Instead of buying expensive tote bags, consider sewing a beach bag tote from a towel. Not only will it be a perfect look to compliment your shore outfit, it is durable and fast-drying.

Beach Bag Tote From a Towel - Materials Needed

To sew a fashionable beach bag, you need to start with a good quality beach towel that is approximately 60 inches long. Choose one that matches the beach towels you use or with similar colors to your favorite bikini. Purchase woven webbing in a matching color and cut it into two 90 inch long pieces. A sewing machine and thread are also required.

If you wish to add extra pockets to your beach bag tote, purchase wash cloths in complimentary colors. Also include a length of woven ribbon and a keychain ring. A needle and sturdy thread are useful as well.

Beach Bag Tote From a Towel - Bag Construction

Begin creating the beach bag tote by laying out the towel on a flat surface with the good side facing up. Pin the strips of strap webbing to the towel at the one quarter and three quarter distances across its width. Use a measuring tape to determine the correct spots. Be sure to center the webbing at the center of the towel so you have the same length straps at the top. Use a sewing machine and strong thread to sew these on the entire length of the towel. Two rows of stitching is ideal.

Fold the beach towel in half with the best side facing in. Put the thread on the sewing machine and stitch up both sides of the towel to form a giant pocket shape. Sewing two rows of stitches with quality thread will help the beach bag be sturdy enough to hold everything you need.

Sew the tops of the strap webbing together with multiple rows of stitches for maximum strength. These should form two loops that can slip easily over your shoulder.

Beach Bag Tote From a Towel - Adding Extras

Inner pockets can be made easily by sewing around three sides of a washcloth on the inside or outside of the beach bag tote. Stitch on a loop of strong ribbon that is looped through a metal keychain ring for a secure place to attach your car keys when you are at the beach. It will be impossible to lose them if they are attached to the beach bag tote.
