Sew Christmas Fabric Star Ornaments

Sew stuffed fabric star ornaments to give your Christmas tree a touch of country charm. These ornaments are made using a small amount of Christmas fabric. I dug out my scraps from previous projects and fabric I had purchased on clearance at the end of the season last year. These ornaments are quick to make and their exposed seams allow for easy construction. Make them for your own tree, then make several to give as gifts.

7-inch wooden star
4 1/2-inch wooden star
Christmas fabric
Old crocheted tablecloth, curtain or doily
Marking pen
Scissors
Straight pins
Sewing machine
1/4-inch-wide ribbon
Ruler
Stuffing
1-inch flat button
Sewing needle and thread

Step 1
Place the 7-inch wooden star on the back of Christmas fabric. Trace around the shape and cut out. Place the 4 1/2-inch wooden star on the back of an old crocheted tablecloth, curtain or doily. Trace around the shape and cut out.

*Wooden stars are what I used as my pattern for this project. If you do not have wooden stars, clip art or other star sources can be used. Simply enlarge and print the patterns on your computer.

Step 2
Place the fabric star on your work surface with the right side facing up. Center the crocheted star on the fabric star with the right side facing up. Pin the stars together.

Step 3
Sew the crocheted star to the fabric star, stitching 1/4 inch from the crocheted star's edge. This applique will leave the edges of the crocheted star exposed.

Step 4
Lay the Christmas fabric on your work surface with the wrong side facing up. Place the appliqued star on the fabric with the right side facing up. Allow excess fabric to extend from all edges of the star. Pin the star to the fabric.

Step 5
Cut an 8-inch length of 1/4-inch-wide ribbon. Fold the ribbon in half matching the two cut ends. Slip 1 inch of the cut ends under one point on the star. Pin the ribbon to secure. This is the ornament hanger.

Step 6
Sew the star to the fabric, stitching 1/4 inch from the edge. Leave a 2-inch opening for stuffing.

Step 7
Cut the fabric using the edges of the star as your guide. Do not cut off the ribbon hanger. The edges of the star are left exposed.

Step 8
Fill the star with stuffing. Sew the opening closed in the same way as the previous stitching.

Step 9
Sew a 1-inch button to the center, right-side of the star. Insert the sewing needle through the thickness of the star. Pull the thread tight to dimple the star's center. Secure the button and cut the thread.
