Sew an Easy Personalized Designer Tissue Box Cover

Cyndee Kromminga
Tissue companies do try to make their packaging pretty. They even call it "designer" packaging. Let's face it, though, nobody wants labels and advertisements decorating their bathrooms. This clever tissue box cover is just the thing to improve on your designer dilemma. With a small amount of fabric and a little bit of your time, you can make a pretty tissue box cover to enhance most any decor style. Make several to change out for the seasons and all of the holidays or sew a few to hold back as last minute gifts for friends and family. You do not need a lot of sewing skill for this project, so there really is no excuse not to make one. If you are a crafter who sells at craft shows, this makes a great filler for your business. It uses so little fabric, you are able to use scraps that you have been saving, making it an economical product. The pattern calls for a 1/2 yard of fabric. With this amount, you will be able to make two tissue covers.

Things You Will Need To Make The Fabric Tissue Cover:

1/2 yard of fabric or a fat quarter
1/8-inch wide satin ribbon
Square tissue box
Hand sewing needle and thread
Sewing machine
Scissors
Seam ripper
Measuring tape
Straight pins
Safety pin
Iron

Steps To Make The Tissue Box Cover:

1. Cut one piece of fabric, 15 inches tall by 18 inches wide. Fold the fabric over with the right sides together and matching the two 15 inch sides. Sew a 1/4 inch zig zag stitch along the 15 inch side and one end of the folded fabric.

2. Fold the open end down a 1/2 inch to the wrong side and press. Fold the top down again, 2 1/2 inches to the wrong side, press and pin. This will form the upper ruffle of your tissue box cover. Sew completely around the fold where pinned, to close. Measure a 1/4 inch up from the stitched line and top stitch. This will form the casing for your ribbon drawstring.

3. Turn the tissue cover right side out. With the side seam of the tissue cover centered on the top, lay the tissue cover flat on your ironing surface. This will cause two points to form on the bottom of the tissue cover. Smooth and press these points in the shape of an arrow. Press the entire tissue cover flat.

4. Place the square tissue box inside the tissue cover. Overlap the points on the bottom of the tissue box and hand stitch together.

5. Cut a small slit in the ribbon casing on the middle front of the tissue cover, using the seam ripper. Cut a 28 inch length of the 1/8-inch wide satin ribbon. Attach one end of the ribbon to the safety pin and thread through the ribbon casing. Gather the top of the tissue cover ruffle, leaving a small opening in the top, and tie the ribbon in a bow. Pull the tissue up through the opening in the top.
