Sew Your Own Hair Scrunchies Hair Accessories

Melanie L. Marten
Girls and women alike enjoy wearing colorful fabric hair scrunchies. These popular hair accessories are rumpled tubes of fabric with an elastic cord running through them. They can be twisted safely around a ponytail or bun to secure hair in a fashionable way.

Hair scrunchie accessories can be purchased at department and accessory stores for up to five dollars each. To save money it is easy to sew your own hair scrunchies. You can even match them to your favorite outfit by purchasing similar fabric at any fabric store.

Materials Needed for a Hair Scrunchie

1) Ten inches by five inches of fabric

2) Six inches of narrow elastic cord

3) Needle and thread or a sewing machine

How to Sew the Hair Scrunchie

Before sewing the hair scrunchie fabric, you should fold it carefully in half with the good sides together. Use pins to attach the sides for neater sewing. Then, using your sewing machine or a needle and matching thread, stitch the long side of the fabric together.

Next, press the seam open with an iron. This will help keep the scrunchie hair accessory smooth and reduce bunching. Then turn the fabric tube right side out.

Turn under approximately half an inch on each end of the fabric tube. Slip the elastic cord into the tube and stitch the ends together securely. If the elastic cord is very narrow, you could attach the ends with a tight knot.

The last step is to stitch the ends of the fabric tube together with a neat slip stitch. The hair scrunchie hair accessory is complete.

Variations on the Plain Hair Scrunchie

Plain hair scrunchies are great for everyday casual wear. You can make them in any fabric from knit t-shirt fabric to denim to silk. Hair scrunchies also may lovely hair accessories for dressier occasions.

One idea is to make the hair scrunchie out of two layers of fabric, such as silk and lace or taffeta and tulle. Using a wider piece of fabric will give a more ruffled appearance.

Another option is to include a length of lace, fringe, or even beaded fringe to the fabric tube when you are sewing the long sides together. These embellishments will dress up this hair scrunchie accessory nicely.

Sewing your own hair scrunchies is a great fashion idea. Not only can you create a huge hair accessory wardrobe in many colors and styles, you will save money over store bought hair scrunchies.

How do you find time for all of your craft projects?

Thanks for this info. I constantly use scrunchies to keep my hair off my neck. It makes sense to make my own rather than continuously spending money on new ones.
