Sew Raggedy Appliqued Candy Corn

Sew raggedy appliqued candy corn bowl fillers for Halloween using bits of leftover and recycled fabric scraps. These candy corn-shaped bowl fillers resemble little stuffed pillows. The stripes are primitively appliqued, leaving raggedy edges. To add to their raggedy charm, the fillers have exposed seams where the front and back are sewn together. Make several to fill a bowl, or give them as seasonal gifts to family and friends.

Things You Will Need:

Lightweight cardboard
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors
Muslin
White or off-white lace, scrap
Orange and yellow fabric, scraps
Straight pins
Sewing machine
Stuffing
Buttons
Needle and thread

Step 1
Draw an 8-inch tall triangle with a 7-inch base on lightweight cardboard. Round the corners and puff out the sides until you have the shape desired for your candy corn bowl filler. Cut out the shape. This is your candy corn pattern.

Step 2
Place the pattern on more lightweight cardboard and trace around it. Cut out the shape. Draw two evenly spaced horizontal lines on the second shape. Cut along the lines. These are the patterns for your candy corn stripes.

Step 3
Lay a scrap of muslin fabric on your work space. Fold it in half so that you have two layers. Place the candy corn pattern on the fabric and trace around it. Cut out the shape through both layers of fabric. One fabric shape is the front of the candy corn and the other is the back.

Step 4
Place the top stripe pattern on a scrap of white lace tablecloth, curtain or doily. Trace around the shape and cut out. Place the middle stripe pattern on orange fabric and the bottom stripe pattern on yellow fabric. Trace around the patterns and cut out.

Step 5
Separate the muslin shapes and set the back aside. Lay the bowl filler front on your work surface. Place the stripes on the shape, matching the edges. Pin the stripes to secure.

Step 6
Using white or off-white thread in your sewing machine, top stitch around each pinned shape 1/4 inch from the edges.

Step 7
Place the candy corn front on top of the candy corn back with the right side facing up. Align the edges and pin. Sew around the pinned candy corn using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave a 3-inch opening on the bottom edge. Note: The raw edges will remain on the outside of the bowl filler.

Step 8
Fill the candy corn with stuffing. Continue to sew the opening closed.

Step 9
Hand-sew two buttons to the front of the candy corn to embellish.
