Sew - Times Are Slow!

Sewing, like most things, is more popular at some times than others. During a slow economy, sewing always enjoys an increase in interest. As folks have less disposable income, they turn to skill and craftiness to replace the money. Clothing, decorations, and accessories can normally be created at a fraction of the cost of buying them in a store.

There is a certain pride that can be taken in making your own clothes and in the thriftiness of making your own home decorations. There is also an individuality that goes with creating your own look. Even if you use patterns that hundreds of others have used, your design will have something that will mark it as your own.

It is a very personal thing to make something with your own hands. To fashion something out of bits and pieces of fabric and a little thread says something about you. It speaks of your resourcefulness. It speaks of creativity and follow-through.

There is an ability to control what you wish to spend. You may still have the latest style of dress but you may choose to make it with a less expensive fabric. Perhaps you can make a top to match your pants for what you might otherwise pay for a pair of already made pants.

During Christmas, people who sew begin way before others. They scurry around snatching up clearance priced fabrics and trims so they will be ready come December. They will have just the perfect gift for each member of the family. It is quite heart-warming to be the recipient of such a gift. It makes one feel very special to know that this member of the family cares enough to spend so much time and thought on a gift. This is particularly true when the gift is made to match a characteristic of it's receiver. Sewing affords a personalizing that can not be achieved through purchasing the latest hot gift or toy.

Fortunately, people who sew love teaching others. They take pride and joy in creating such lovely things and are very happy to pass this ability on to others who want to learn. If you scour the net, you will find tons of information. There are general sewing tutorials. There are free patterns. You can find message boards filled with people who love discussing and sharing photos of their creations. These communities have much to teach in a very friendly atmosphere.

They are very encouraging to those just beginning. It's also bolstering to see the mistakes that people make. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone has a project that just flopped. When we see people who are really good at their craft have one that goes awry, it helps us to be a little easier on ourselves when we mess up.

The US is going through a slow time, economically, so this is a good time for us to pick up that fabric and get started stitching. We can have a good time all in the name of being responsible and thrifty.
