Sewing 101: How to Choose a Pattern

What You Need to Know to Choose the Right Sewing Pattern for You

Cheryl Dennett
Knowing how to choose a pattern is a very important step in learning to sew. There are many companies that produce sewing patterns. All of them have many choices and you will surely find something you like. Here are some tips to get you started.

There are many types of patterns to choose from. The major companies are all very good. They include Simplicity"µ, McCall's"µ, Butterick"µ, and Vogue"µ. These are the easiest to find, especially the first two. The first two also have patterns for beginning sewers which are very easy to use and cheaper when the others are not on sale.

In my personal opinion, Simplicity patterns are easier to sew because their directions seem to make more sense. However, for what I want, McCall's has a better variety. I have never used Vogue patterns, but have heard their directions are not for the faint of heart (or inexperienced sewers).

If you are planning to buy a sewing pattern for clothing, be sure to have the body measurements of the person the garment is intended for. Read the back of the pattern envelope carefully. Most sewing patterns come with a variety of sizes available. Simplicity patterns tend to run slightly bigger then the others. But, regardless of which pattern used, always go by body measurements and not the size you think you wear. Just like in different brands of ready made clothing, a size 12 in one pattern is not the exact same size as a 12 in another brand of pattern.

Most stores that sell patterns have books printed by each company that show all their sewing patterns. These are very handy to browse through. You might even get the clerk to let you have one or more after they are not using them anymore. New patterns books come out several times a year and they don't need all the old ones. But, the sewing patterns don't change as often as the books. Some of them are produced for several years.

Occasionally, when I am at a store that has a very good sale on a certain brand of pattern, I just browse through the drawers of patterns. I figure if I can get a pattern for $1.00, I am not losing anything. I'll use it at some point in the future, and probably want it when there is not a sale going on. Sewing patterns can cost up to, and sometimes more than, $20.00. So, finding them for $1.00 is very fortunate. Hobby Lobby and Hancock Fabrics are two outlets who often have patterns on sale.

Whatever brand you decide to use be sure you choose a pattern that matches your level of skill. There are even "Sewing Patterns For Dummies"µ" made by one of the major companies. There are also several books which have tips for beginners and you can usually find them in the sewing section of any craft store.

Sewing can be a very rewarding hobby. With some practice, you will soon be making clothing and household decorations with ease. Not only will you be able to save money making things yourself, you will also have the satisfaction of seeing things you have created being put to use.
