One of the reasons cotton is so popular is it's texture. It is soft, washable, usually colorfast and easy to work with. It is usually a plain weave. This means the fabric is flat and has an even texture. Cotton comes in a variety of weights. It can be thin and gauzy. And, then, it can also be heavy canvas. It also comes in various weights in between these two extremes. The variety of colors and prints of cotton fabric seems to be limitless. It can also be blended with other types of fabric.
The colors in cotton fabric will eventually fade. This is caused by repeated washing or prolonged exposure to the sun. Even so, it is a popular fabric for garments to wear outdoors because it breathes well. It will allow the air to pass through the fabric and is also absorbent enough to wick the sweat away from your body.
Cotton is usually dyed after it has been woven into fabric. Some types of fabric are woven of dyed threads, however. One of these types of fabric is gingham. It is a checked pattern that is made by weaving colored and white yarn together. Chambray and denim are both woven of colored warp threads and white weft. The lighter weight fabric of chambray is more often used for shirts. The heavier denim is used for jeans and jackets. A type of fabric that alternates tightly woven stripes with loosely woven ones is seersucker. This method will make the fabric crinkly. It is usually a lightweight fabric used for sewing summer clothing.
Cotton flannel is fuzzy on one side. This makes it a napped fabric. Another napped cotton fabric is velvet. However, the napes of velvet brush smooth in one direction and stand up with a rough feeling in the other. This is called a directional nap. Corduroy also has directional nap. But it has rows which are called sales. Some other fabrics that are made of all cotton or blended with cotton are calico, cambric, chintz, damask, jersey, lawn, muslin, poplin, terry cloth, and voile.
The main thing to look for when choosing fabric that is all cotton or a blend of cotton with another material is the weight and texture. Be sure your choice will produce an end product that you are hoping for. Hopefully, these tips will help you choose the correct type of cotton fabric for your sewing project.
