Sewing: A Frugal Tool

Leslie Boe
Learning to sew the basic straight stitch, backstitch, and maybe even the zigzag stitch, can help you meet your budget.

Just think of all the things that you can do with those stitches alone. Curtains, tablecloths, runners, cloth doilies, cloth napkins, patches on clothing, some clothing, pillows, quilts - the possibilities are endless.

When the need arises for curtains or anything else, look to see if you can sew it. By making it yourself, you can save money, you get creative license over what fabric I use and you get a boost to your self-confidence. It is a wonderful feeling that pushes you to try your hand at the next project.

Look on the internet for free patterns of what you are going to make or some fabric stores have free patterns on stands.

Of course, by making things yourself you may not get the quality or elegance you would get if you were to purchase the item. However, you accomplished it yourself and you saved money. Perhaps in the future, when money is not so tight, you will be able to afford to purchase the item.
