Sewing Lessons in San Francisco

The Sewing Workshop is located at 2010 Balboa Street. This is a general purpose arts center that offers classes in Beginning Sewing, Alterations, Couture Sewing, Duvet Covers, Pillows, Wool Work and even Shoes. Lengths and prices for all of these classes are all over the map, with fees from $50 for a one-day Alterations class to a Couture series that costs $995. Private lessons are also available. Machines are provided to students on-site but you are also welcome to bring your own.

Apparel Arts is more of a design school than for basic sewing, but more experienced sewers may find some interesting stuff going on here. Courses on offer are Apparel Production, Couture Sewing, Design Principles, Draping, Fashion Illustration, Grading, Lingerie, Seam Binding, Tailoring and Textiles. There is one class called Very Basic Sewing for beginners, which runs you $248 for four sessions spanning a month. There's also all sorts of intensive patternmaking classes. Classes tend to run into the low hundreds of dollars for several weeks of instruction. They can be found at 2325 Third Street #206.

The California College of the Arts is a bit of a "higher end" solution (and pricey) but they do offer extensive courses in textiles and fashion design. Visit their site for further details.

The City College of San Francisco offers a Sew-It-All Workshop through the Continuing Education department. This is a California community college so tuition is generally $20 per unit, however there may be additional materials fees for a sewing course that will make the price higher than normal.

Better Living Through Sewing offers both classes and private lessons in the San Francisco bay area. Group classes are held in Oakland at 336 40th Street but apparently private lessons can be arranged on site in the area. Group classes on offer are Commercial Patterns, "Re-vamped, Re-used and Re-cycled", Perfect Pants, Sunday Sewing Lab, Jeans Hacking, Introduction to your Machine, and one called "Buttons, Zippers, Hooks and Eyes Oh My!" Most of the classes seem to be about $30 to $50 per session, and you need to bring your own machine and materials. Check out their site for complete details and information.

Finally, Stitch Lounge seems to offer sewing classes but I can't tell what type because their website is janky and refuses to load anything beyond the index page. Maybe it'll work better for you - give it a shot here.
