Sex After Baby

How soon after delivery can a couple have intercourse? There are no absolute answers to this question. It's probably best to wait three or four weeks to allow the vaginal wall muscles to regain their strength and the episiotomy, if any, to heal. Ask your doctor whether or not there are special circumstances in your case that might make waiting longer than this advisable. Some caregivers advise that a woman wait until after her postpartum checkup to resume having intercourse.

You may feel a bit uncomfortable at first because the tissues are still tender. You can talk to your partner about this, to better prepare you both. A slight change in position or a little extra gentleness may help. A lubricant such as K-Y jelly may be helpful. This discomfort is only temporary though, and it will pass with some time!

If you are breastfeeding your baby, you might find that your breasts leak during intercourse. Don't be concerned, this slight flow of milk is a normal response to sexual excitement. Remember that you could become pregnant again very soon after delivery unless you take precautions against it. Even if you have not had a menstrual period, you may have ovulated. Breastfeeding is NOT a means of contraception. It is possible to become pregnant even if you are breastfeeding.

It is best to discuss family planning with your doctor so that you will be prepared.
