Sex and the City 2: Soundtrack Review

The Sex and the City 2 Soundtrack Evokes New York, Girl Power and Broadway

Liza Minnelli sings Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." If that's not enough reason to give the Sex and the City 2 movie soundtrack a listen, I don't know what is.

While Sex and the City 2 is getting mixed reviews thanks to a far-fetched plot (what, you've never run into an ex-lover halfway around the world?), its soundtrack is an equally odd mix of the ridiculous and the sublime. Besides Liza doing Beyonce, there's Alicia Keys doing Debbie Harry, and Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte singing "I Am Woman."

Here's a quick Sex and the City 2 soundtrack review.

Sex and the City 2 Soundtrack Review: Song reviews
Keys' glitzy take on "Rapture" is the most compelling song on the soundtrack. The soulful remake includes a portion of the Sex and the City theme music weaved into the Blondie classic. Ricki-Lee's "Can't Touch It" is a potential girls-night-out clubbing anthem aimed squarely at the movie's largely female demographic.

Much of the soundtrack is composed of recycled material, but at least it's good recycled material, like Erykah Badu's "Window Seat," Keys' "Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down," and Cyndi Lauper's timeless ballad "True Colors."

Jennifer Hudson, whose Louise was one of the most likable characters of the first SATC movie, contributes the duet "Love is Your Color" with Leona Lewis, but, like many of the ballads on the album, it falls flat.

The Sex and the City Men's Choir contributes three songs, adding to the soundtrack's Broadway-esque feel. While Minelli's "Single Ladies" is only enjoyable for its novelty factor, its inclusion is evidence that the soundtrack's supervisors don't take it too seriously, and therefore neither should we.

Sex and the City 2 Soundtrack Review: Summary
As a companion piece to the film, the Sex and the City 2 soundtrack is a success. As a record you'd want to listen to over and over on its own... not so much.

Not a bad list of songs, but single ladies to me is just garbage, about 2 lines of words, and then la-la-la for the rest of the time. I need a movie with a good 70's soundtrack lol :)

Movie soundtracks can be so strange. I've liked some more than the movie itself but even one dorky bit of music in the middle of an otherwise good soundtrack can mess things up. Loved your review!
