Sex and the City Movie: The Spoilers, Rumors and Buzz

F Flores
The long-awaited Sex and the City Movie is mere days away (it opens on May 30th). Since premiering last week at London's Leicester Square Theatre, internet spoilers, rumors and buzz have escalated, and some early reviews of the film give confirmation to some major plot lines.

Here is what (we think) we know...

Carrie Bradshaw (portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mr. Big (Chris Noth) are living together in New York City. Carrie has written 2 or 3 (I have read both) more books since her last one, writes for Vogue sometimes and has given up her weekly column. We have now learned that Big's name is actually John James Preston (remember seeing "John" pop up on the display on Carrie's phone when he called her at the end of the series finale?). The two of them are house hunting for a mondo-Trump-sized apartment, which they find. Once they find one, they decide to get married, as a natural next step. Carrie plans a lavish wedding (in one of the trailers, Big is seen saying "200?" and I believe he is referring to the number of guests Carrie is planning to invite) and is featured in Vogue magazine as a model 40 year-old bride.

There is an elaborate photo shoot at Vogue magazine with designer everything. Candance Bergen makes an appearance as Enid Frick, the editor at Vogue.

Meanwhile, Samantha Jones (Kim Catrall) is living in Malibu and working as the publicist for her much younger boyfriend, Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis). Evidently, Ms. Catrall has given the go-ahead for her (and therefore) Samantha's age to be revealed in the movie as 50. Their Malibu neighbor is a hyper-stud, reminiscent of Samantha-pre-Smith. Evidently, this new neighbor is temptation for Samantha. Also, there are pictures on the web of Samantha walking her dog, thus shocking the viewer with the commitment to pet ownership that seems somehow un-Samantha. However, there is said to be some tension in Samantha's life, as she is not as happy in California as she was in New York.

Tension is abound in the Brooklyn home of Miranda Hobbs (played by Tony Award winner, Cynthia Nixon). After several sexless months between the two of them, her husband, Steve Brady (David Eigenberg) confesses to a night of meaningless infidelity and they split up. Some spoilers suggest Miranda then looks to move back to Manhattan (she always hated Brooklyn). There is also supposedly a scene during which Miranda explains the situation to Steve's mom (played by Anne Meara) who suffered a stroke in the finale season. Her response is "Steve who?" However, I have checked the cast lists on several different sites, so she may be dead or in a nursing home when the movie begins.

Rumors have been plentiful that a character was going to be killed off. Michael Patrick King, series creator, has said emphatically that he would not kill of Mr. Big, and Kristin Davis who plays Charlotte has stated with equal fervor that her character would neither die in childbirth or in a freak tennis accident, as supposed spoilers have indicated over the last few months. There are some reports that no-one dies, but these are from people that have not seen the last twenty minutes of the movie. If a character does die, odds are that it would be Steve's mom. Then again, Sex and the City rarely got into a heavy place and stayed there to long, so the report of no one dying could well be correct.

Speaking of Kristin Davis, her character, Charlotte York Goldenblatt begins the movie as the proud mommy of Lily Goldenblatt, the little girl that she and husband Harry (Evan Handler) adopted from China. Reports have been floating around the 'net for months that her character is pregnant for most of the movie, and that Charlotte serves as the functional anchor in the film.

"Dreamgirls" star Jennifer Hudson is the newest addition to the cast as Carrie's assistant, Louise, a young woman who has come to the city looking for love.

The spoiler/rumor mill gets a bit hazy, as dream sequences are supposedly used in parts of the film. Supposedly Big leaves Carrie at the altar, yet one insider says the viewers will get the "happy ending" they desire. Previews seem to support a bad phone call from Big to Carrie, but reviewers are unanimously reporting an ending that is satisfying.

I guess we'll see on the 30th!
