'Sex in the City': Re-casting the Movie Franchise

Rolando Cruz
Let's face it, "Sex in the City", is now a Hollywood movie franchise with a cast that's aging fast. Sure the two movies released since the end of popular television series have grossed over $700 million dollars, but how long will fans stay interested in the love lives of women approaching their 50's? Heck, actress Kim Catrall, at 54, is already there, while Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis are 45. So what's next for this money making franchise? Should producers fold the tent, or start working on "Sex in the City:The Florida Retirement Center?" The only logical answer may be to re-cast the whole franchise and give "Sex in the City" a much needed make over. The question then becomes, what new Hollywood "It Girls" should be cast in the lead roles?

Blake Lively (Carrie Bradshaw)

Yes, she may be lacking some of the quirkiness that comes natural to Sarah Jessica Parker, but 23 year old Blake Lively (picture ), would still make a good Carrie Bradshaw, the emotional neurotic writer at the center of the winning franchise. The blonde actress who stars in the CW's "Gossip Girl", has the fashion style (35 Most Stylish Women To Look Out For by Glamour UK in 2009), good looks (#4 on Maxim's magazine Hot 100 in 2010) and love of New York City that would help sell the role as love starved Carrie Bradshaw.

Alyson Michalka(Samantha Jones)

If Alyson Michalka's (picture) role on the new television series "Hellcats" is any indication, then the 21 year old has the sex appeal and confident air to be "Sex in the City's" next Samantha Jones. While she would add a wrinkle of quirkiness to the character that perhaps Kim Cattrall does not have, it would not be a stretch to picture Michalka as the cast's loyal friend with a closet full of potential "soul mates."

Minka Kelly (Charlotte York)

Minka Kelly (picture), the girlfriend of New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter, has the right look and voice to play the romantically optimistic Charlotte York. The petite brunette's rise to fame came while playing Lyla Garrity on the NBC series "Friday Night Lights". Her role on the series, as a popular cheerleader who is also a good student, roughly parallel's the life of a younger Charlotte York.

Emma Stone (Miranda Hobbes)

Besides having the required hair color, Emma Stone (picture) is a gifted young actress who is capable of playing the role of cynical Harvard law graduate Miranda Hobbes. Despite her propensity for playing off-beat characters, Stone has enough acting talent to portray the confident career-minded lawyer. Though due to Stone's age, the character may need to be still enrolled in Law school at the time the role is re-casted.
