Sex and Death 101 (2007): A Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
Sex and Death 101 stars Simon Baker as Roderick Blank, a wealthy businessman whose life is turned upside down when he receives an email of everyone he's had sex with and everyone he will have sex with. Winona Ryder stars as Death Nell, a woman who puts men into a coma that she believes is guilty of sex crimes. Neil Flynn and Dash Mihok star as Roderick's buddies, Zack and Lester. Warning: my movie review contains plot spoilers.

Sex and Death 101 is a rambling movie of sexual exploits and silly situations that result in an undeserved happy ending. The movie did hold my attention only because I was trying to figure out what the point of the movie was. Simon Baker was adorable as Roderick Blank, the womanizing jerk who dumps his fiancée to sleep with everyone on the list as soon as possible. He is quite happy with the list until the sexual exploits get a little weird and too controlling of his life. With the help of his secretary Trixie, played by Mindy Cohen, Roderick buries the list and tries to get control of his life back. He meets and falls in love with Dr. Miranda Storm played by Leslie Bibb. Roderick thinks Miranda is next on his list but it turns out she isn't and he is crushed when she doesn't return his affections. In a truly ironic twist of fate, she only likes him as friends and refuses to sleep with him. And in another really odd "twist" in the movie, Miranda twists her ankle and dies accidentally by hitting her head. In a moment of grief, Roderick digs up the lists and finds that the woman next on the list is Dr. Mirabelle Stone, the doctor working at the morgue where Miranda's body is kept. Mirabelle is only #66 so Roderick quickly works his way through the next 30 or so women until he finally reaches #101.

#101 on the list is Gillian De Raisx, also known as Death Nell. Roderick is frozen in fear because he thinks Death Nell is going to kill him and he does his best to avoid her which results in a very unbelievable scene of him deflowering 20 Catholic Girls, which just proves my thought that the movie was written by a man. Anyway, Roderick get a light bulb moment and realizes the meeting is fated so he goes to meet death head on. Ok so at this point I think the movie is trying to say our destiny is fated and there is no avoiding it. Perhaps but Roderick's fate is not the obvious fate of being so justifiable killed by Death Nell. Nope they fall in love and live happily ever after. Yeap the movie was definitely written by a man.

The movie was vaguely entertaining. Simon Baker was cute and Winona Ryder was very good. I was especially amused by all the fully clothed sex scenes. I didn't realize so many people had sex fully clothed. I guess Roderick was in such a hurry to finish the list he didn't like to waste time by taking his clothes off. Anyway, the movie has some funny parts but nothing worth watching twice. I give the movie 2 out of 5 stars.
