Sex During Pregnancy

Unless there is a special problem with your pregnancy, which your prenatal caregiver will discuss with you, you may make love throughout your nine months of pregnancy! No harm will come to you or your baby.

Vaginal bleeding, pain, or leakage of amniotic fluid are indications that intercourse may be inadvisable, and you should report any of these problems to your health-care provider. Late in pregnancy, as your cervix begins to dilate, you make wish to use a condom as an extra precaution against infection.

Oral sex during pregnancy is permissible if you enjoy it, but be careful that your partner does not blow air into your vagina. Because of the way your circulatory system changes to accommodate your pregnancy, it is possible for air bubbles (emboli) to enter the bloodstream at this time and cause serious damage, even death.

For some people, sexual desire is enhanced during pregnancy. For others, it is diminished. As your shape changes, you may be more comfortable with different positions or techniques. Don't be afraid to experiment. Talking together about your feelings at this time will help both you and your parter, and put any fears to rest.
