Sex ed is a good place for teens who are too embarrassed to talk to parents or other relatives about sex to turn to. Sometimes parents don't do anything more than lecture their children on not having sex. If students have sex education in their schools, they can talk about sex without feeling awkward or uncomfortable. Sex education teachers can answer their questions and teach things other than abstinence. It's easy for teens to become misinformed or mislead about sex and sex education classes can inform students about the misconceptions and fallacies about sex.
Teens need to learn that having sex is a huge, serious responsibility. With aids, Chlamydia, herpes, and other std's out there, students need to know how to be safe and protect themselves. They must learn that there are alternative ways to be intimate with your loved one. They must learn that it is ok not to have sex with your partner, and tat sex is not just all fun and games. They also have the right to know how to protect themselves from STD's and unwanted pregnancies. Without all the information, students are more likely to make bad decisions when it comes to sex.
Most importantly, they have to know that they should not have sex because everyone else is, since it is not something to be pressured into. If you have sex before you are ready, it can devastate you forever, and teens need to realize that. It is funny that we are so uncomfortable talking to teens about sex since it is everywhere in TV, movies, and magazines. The reality is that we can not expect to keep sex from teens in hope that they will be virgins on their wedding day.
