This dirty old man assaulted a schoolgirl on her way to school.
Luckily, she had the wherewithal to snap a picture of the menace with her cell phone. And the police subsequently arrested him.
The pervert was released on $500 bail. Only $500! We pay more for flat-screen TV's. And he was given a 2-ride Metro Card so he could take the subway home, according to a NY Post update. We paid for this creep to get back on the subway?
We should keep schoolchildren safe from sexual abuse and psychological trauma on their way to and from school.
Last November, there was much ado over these subway sleezes. We were even talking about putting their pictures on a "Wall of Shame." There were "587 reports of sex offenses in the subway system" last year, reports the New York Times. And, undoubtedly, more unreported cases due to the embarrassment associated with the crime. Luckily, this young lady had the courage to come forward.
But the law and society have let her down. We have dropped the ball on subway sexual assaults. If we had taken action last year, this incident might not have happened.
Will we learn from this or will we be saying the same thing next year?
A wall of shame, higher bail, stiffer sentences, cameras on subway cars or whatever else it takes to keep these subway sickos away from schoolchildren is what we need to do now.
