Sex with Wellbutrin

Kathy Foust
As a mental health worker, I heard plenty of stories about the side effects of antidepressants. Even now, as I research antidepressants and their side effects, most of them tend to be unpleasant. Both men and women generally experience a lack of sex drive or a lack of being able to complete sexual tasks, among other side effects.

Wellbutrin, otherwise known as bupropion, is a rather popular antidepressant, mostly because it has other qualities than just assisting in the relief of symptoms associated with depression. For instance, Wellbutrin helps to ease anxiety attacks before they start. Since many people become depressed over issues that make them anxious, this is a prominent quality of the drug. It also makes it a very effective stop smoking aid by relieving some of the anxiety that comes with attempting to end smoking. But, Wellbutrin also has some secondary ways to relieve anxiety, if you have a partner that is.

Wellbutrin is one of the few medications that actually causes an increase in sex drive. I'm not talking about just wanting to increase sexual relations from once every couple of weeks to once a week either. I'm talking about an antidepressant that can have the impact of making men view their women doing household chores in a whole new light and making women run to the "toy store" armed with credit cards and life savings. In fact, if you ever see a woman in an adult toy store and she's complaining because they only have baskets and not carts, I would have to bet that she is on some version of Wellbutrin, whether it be Wellbutrin itself or bupropion.

Wellbutrin has plenty of other side effects. If people who take Wellbutrin use those side effects to their advantage, they may even find that the Wellbutrin actually ends up being a secondary cause for a decrease in depressive symptoms.

For instance, consider the married couple that has grown apart. Naturally, this can have a huge impact on their sex drive. One or both of them may get depressed. Depression causes even more problems with the couple as it causes one or both of them to lose not only their sex drive, but energy and motivation in general. Since Wellbutrin causes an increase in the sex drive, the couple may begin "bonding" more. Even the normal issues such as weight gain may be combatted by the side effect of an increased sex drive.

If your main concern is that you don't want to take antidepressants because you don't want the side effects, you might just want to reconsider. Wellbutrin may just be your ticket to improvement in more areas of your life than just one!
