These Moans Left Just Enough to the Imagination in Popular Music

Joan Osbourne (St. Teresa) - With blues-infused folk rock grit, Joan Osbourne hits the sexy whines and calls that make you wonder who she is, where she came from -- oh who cares, total sex appeal vibrating in her voice. This song perfectly illustrates her sexy-appeal moan, in a decidedly unsexy song with regard to lyrics. Check out 3:44 in the song, trust me.

Gavin Rossdale (Everything Zen) - Raspy, graveled, English, this voice launched Bush to 90's fame and Rossdale into a "grunge" sex-symbol. Everything Zen became the band's first hit song, in no small part to the less than subtle, yet not intrusive sexy moan at the very end of this track.

Kate Bush (Running up That Hill) '" From one bush to another, Kate offers a sensuality and haunting quality to her libido inducing lyrics. One can see the appeal in running up that hill after hearing these moans of curiosity.

Billy Idol (Cradle of Love) '" Billy knew how to play to his sexuality. Rising to fame in the 1980's, he was known for the lip snarl, and specifically in this song, for moans, and an overtly sexual tone to both the song and video. In your face.

Tori Amos (Sugar) '" Moan-driven as a song, this song carries along with more vocal sounds than specific lyrics. Tori is an expert at the sighs, vocal-chord rattling that encourages imaginations. As the song trails off, high-pitched calls echo like a bird.

Prince (Purple Rain) '" Sure, the Purple Royalty is famously known for his sex appeal, it's his thing. Any number of his songs could be cited for this list. Purple Rain is chosen because of the passion behind it. He is an expert at vocal variety and modulation and plays to his strengths in creating his image.

Tina Turner (What's Love got to do with it) '" Hitting lows in her voice, Turner has a strong vulnerability, a contradiction that works for her. This moan comes throughout this hit song, right before the chorus. Indeed what does love have to do with it in this case?

Mick Jagger (Don't Tear Me Up) '" What came first, the sexy moan, or the sex appeal? Which created the other; are they mutually exclusive or dependent? Does it matter? Pick a Jagger song, either solo or with the Rolling Stones, and attempt to find a line not somewhat tinged in sex-appeal.

Milla Jovovich (Don't Fade Away) '" She's well known for being gorgeous. She's kicked ass in a film series. She sings too, utilizing that infinitely unique voice, she delivers a line as well in songs as on the big screen. This song showcases drawn-out moans, with a sort of aching quality.

Madonna (Erotica) '" Take your pick from image altering sex imagery. The moan is almost an instrument to Madonna who smartly incorporates it into her music. This could be the most sexually explicit song she has, that remains sexy without tipping too far into gimmicky.

Elvis (Suspicious Minds) '" Pushing sexual boundaries before most of these other artists were on the scene, Elvis knew how to remain tongue-in-cheek in displaying sexuality. Soulful moans are commonplace in his music, and song choice worked well as vehicles for the sexual moans.
