"Sexting DA" Kenneth Kratz Will Resign, His Attorney Says

Kenneth Kratz, the Calumet County, Wisconsin District Attorney who was under pressure to resign office after it was disclosed he sent sexually suggestive text messages to a domestic violence victim, will step down before October 8th, his attorney said on September 27th. Governor Jim Doyle had begun the formal process of removing Kratz from office after he received formal complaints from Calumet County residents regarding Kratz's conduct as district attorney.

Kenneth Kratz's attorney, Robert Craanen, made the announcement at a hearing at the Calumet County Courthouse that was to determine the schedule for the removal process. October 8th is the date the removal process will begin unless Doyle receives Kratz's resignation letter before then. Craanen stated he believed the removal was politically motivated and that there was no way his client would win. Craanen also said Kratz decided his resignation was the best course of action for everyone.

This all started earlier in September when it was revealed that Kratz had sent suggestive text messages to 26 year old domestic abuse victim Stephanie L. Van Groll in 2009. Kratz was prosecuting Van Groll's ex- boyfriend at the time. Van Groll notified police, who forwarded the accusations to state officials. Since that time, another woman whom Kratz met through an online dating service has come forward alleging Kratz disclosed confidential details of a murder investigation to her, and invited her to an autopsy if she "would be his girlfriend and wear high heels and a skirt". A third woman, 31 year old Maria Ruskiewicz, last week also accused Kratz of texting suggestive messages to her while she sought his help obtaining a pardon for an old conviction. A fourth woman, an unidentified 38 year old alleged domestic violence victim, has told the Appleton Post-Crescent Kratz offered to help her with a victim impact statement in exchange for sex. And Calumet County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Froelich said a fifth unidentified woman also contacted his office. Her allegations were forwarded to the State Justice Department. The nature of her allegations was not revealed.

Kratz has denied the autopsy allegation, and has not commented on the others. He is currently on medical leave.
