Sexual Segregation in the 21st Century

Historically speaking, women were thought to be of lower intelligence levels than men. It was even thought that due to the rigors of education, women would not be able to bear children, women were to be a distraction to men or it would make women behave lime men: coarse and vulgar. Today, men are still always mentioned before women in any context. This reinforces the idea that men are better or ore dominant than women while women are basically secondary to men. Additionally, men are always addresses as "Mr." which does not tell a man's relation to the other sex. Women, however, are addresses "Ms." or "Mrs." which tells her relationship to men at all time. This reinforces even more the idea that women are "incomplete" without a man's presence. Furthermore, the general media uses man as the dominant languages. For instance, "policeman", "fireman", "mankind", etc. These became the norms of our language and it stresses the idea of a man being the worker or the breadwinner and hat we live in a society dominated by men while women are secondary to men.
Sadly it does not stop with the media. In elementary educations, boys receive a more significant amount of attention than girls. Boys are more called upon for answers than girls. Teachers usually forget when a boy blurt out an answer to a question without raising his hand. However, they would correct a girl if she does the same. Boys are more challenged by their teachers and receive more attention so they can find the best way for the best answer. Boys receive award for being "best thinker", " most scientific" while girls receive awards for being "an all around sweetheart" or for "cutest personality". Boys are also referred, more than girls, to special education classes. Boys learn that they do not have to behave well as long as they get the correct answers while girls learn that through their "good behavior" they can get rewarded nor necessarily for their academic achievement. According to Women, Men & Society, in school textbooks, women are rarely referred to. The book that mentioned women the most "was only for 3.75 pages of the book or 0.01 % of the book total". Moreover, the only women who are mentioned are famous women who were married to powerful or famous men.
So what can be done to solve this segregation that has continued for ages? I do not think that anything can be done with the present generation. I believe we need to start with the youth because they are the future. Some people suggested sex segregated schools so males do not interrupt the females if they are trying to study or do something academic. Also, so teachers do not discriminate between the sexes. Some people suggested single sex classes in both-sexes school so the focus would be on one sex in a given class. also the incorporation of positive attitude toward women in textbooks or the incorporation of women in general so boys can be balanced in their gender education. Another method would be to introduce women's studies classes in the curriculum so students can see the impact of the role of women in their lives because women have contributed a lot to our world; not just by being mothers.

I was told once that I was a hero in reading and not in writing. That was in sixth grade. I was told that because my writing was always "hors sujet" or was out of the subject and that I was too imaginative....  View profile
