Whether you are in a new relationship or you've been married for 30 years, it is important to keep the spark of romance alive. Romantic Valentine's Day and anniversary gifts keep that flame alive and glowing. Romantic gifts don't need to be expensive to be special. Some gifts cost nothing more than a little time and creativity. Valentine's Day and Anniversary gifts must be unique and personal, however. Here is the definitive guide for choosing a romantic gift for that special him or her.

Lover to Lover Massage: Nothing is more romantic than warm skin contact between lovers. Create a sensual massage environment by laying out a quilt and pillows in front of the fireplace. Light candles. Open a bottle of wine. Serve chocolates. Warm lavender or sandalwood oil over a candle. Begin massaging at the scalp and work down the body, massaging in the warmed oil. Play a romantic piece of music:

Ravel's Bolero
Bizet's Habanera, from Carmen
Pachelbel's Canon in D
Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
Sibelius, Finlandia

Antique or Vintage gift: Visit a local antique shop for romantic gifts. Those Victorians and Edwardians knew all about romance. Browse vintage accessories, jewelry, decor, clothing, photographs. Look for that special piece that reminds you of an intimate moment or occasion. For her, romantic gifts of antique jewelry, millinery, hair combs, comb and brush set, vanity mirror, keepsake box or framed photograph will be treasured. For him: antique cigarette case, filigree lighter, smoking table or smoking jacket. Vintage smoking accessories are lovely, even for non-smokers, and are highly prized collectibles. Other romantic, antique gifts for him might include a man's ring, cuff links, tie tack, wardrobe accessories, silk handkerchief or cravat, vintage Fedora hat, framed picture or collectible.

Personalized photo blanket: Major retailers with photo centers now have technology to print personal photos on throw blankets. What a romantic gift for him or her to cuddle up in a blanket with your photo on it.

Portrait Studio Photograph: Some time before Valentine's Day or your anniversary, make a date with your lover to have your portrait taken together at a professional portrait studio. Many portrait studios take outdoor photos also. A couple photograph is a very romantic gift.

Picnic Basket for Two: Give a romantic gift that can be enjoyed for many anniversaries and Valentine's Days to come. Select a picnic basket. Fill picnic basket with two wine glasses, cork screw, linen napkins, festive tablecloth, cutting board, cheese knife, hors d'oeuvres forks, plates and utensils for two. For the actual picnic spread, pack fresh grapes, strawberries, cheese, crackers, hard salami, finger sandwiches, petit fours and a bottle of wine. These picnic accessories retail at inexpensive prices at TJ Maxx, Wal-Mart, Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Romantic Game:An Enchanted Evening Romantic Board Game, Truth or Dare: A Game of Passion, Romantic Rendezvous Game, To Know You Better, The UnGame for Couples, Just4Play Interactive DVD Game for Couples and Romantic Sensations are all available from Amazon.com .These romantic games all make perfect gifts for him or her.

Body Art kits from Barnes and Noble:Barnes and Noble carries a line of adult craft and activity kits, including The Art of Henna Body Art, Tattoo Stencils, Essential Oils Kit, Chinese Symbols Body Stencils and Celtic Tattoo Symbols. Spend a romantic evening creating lovely temporary Henna body art and tattoos on each other.

Hmmm... body art done in a romantic setting sounds like fun, esp for younger couples. A picnic like you describe sounds nice... well, not in the midwest in February, but still, a romantic idea! The interactive DVD or romantic board games are new to me. But my spouse (of 35 yrs in Aug) & I used to read erotica to each other sometimes to set the mood. My favorite suggestion is always a full body massage. Mmmmmmmmm. *sigh* ; )
