For this project, you will need (per tray):
- One unfinished wooden tea tray (available at craft supply shops)
- Several dozen Scrabble game board tiles
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Epoxy glue
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Cover the work area you will be crafting this tray with newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Sand the unfinished wooden tea tray with a couple sheets of medium or fine grit sandpaper. Then, use a tack cloth or other type of soft cloth to wipe away any dust from the surface of the tray.
Prime the outside of the tray using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the primer set for about an hour. Paint the tray on all sides using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White. Continue to add coats of paint to the tray until the color of the wood no longer shines through.
Sand the non-letter sides of each Scrabble game board tile. Wipe down and prime each of the letters with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. After the tiles have dried for a half an hour or longer, paint then using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper. Allow both the tray and the tiles to finish curing overnight.
With a ruler and a pencil, divide the inside of the tray into one inch blocks. Adhere the pink painted tiles letter side down with epoxy glue. Allow the glue to dry overnight before enjoying your new tray.
PROJECT VARIATIONS: This project can be customized in many different ways. Use a few tiles letter side up to create words or sayings. Or, consider using other color schemes. Light purples, blues, and yellows all make for very feminine styles. If a more masculine tone is your fancy, consider using dark shades.
TIP: The finished project in this craft is very versatile. Use this tray in a home office for holding file folders, mail, important paperwork, greeting cards, lists, schedules, calendars, etc.
