Vintage doilies are available very inexpensively at yard sales, auctions, and flea markets. You might even find them in your home linen closet. Pick a doily that is big enough to cover the yoke of the hanger when folded in half. It needs to be at least that big, but it can be bigger. I also use a white coat hanger so that the wire blends with the doily. If you don't have a wire hanger, paint a dark one with white spray paint.
This shabby chic jewelry holder would also make a great place for displaying vintage brooches or as a scented sachet to hang special clothes on. Spritz the crocheted doily with your favorite scent and refresh every month or so.
Alternative options-You could make your own doilies, but the project would take quite a while longer to complete or you could purchase doilies at a craft store, but then they become expensive.
Things You Will Need to Make a Jewelry Holder:
Crocheted doily, large enough to cover the hanger
6 inch crocheted doily
2 1/2 inch wide wired ribbon
Hand sewing needle and thread
Scissors
Measuring tape
Steps to make a jewelry holder:
1. Many hangers have angles on them, use the needle nose pliers to form the shoulder area of the hanger into a slope.
2. Thread the hook of the hanger through the center of the crocheted doily.
3. Pin the doily together at the bottom of the hanger. Working from the back of the doily hanger, stitch through all layers connecting the doily to the hanger.
4. Cut a 24 inch length from the 2 1/2 inch wide wired ribbon. Using the wire as a guide, gather the ribbon tightly, along one long length. Begin rolling the end of the ribbon tightly to form a rose bud. Continue to roll the rest of the ribbon loosely to form the rose. Use a needle and thread to secure the ribbon as you form the rose.
5. Position the 6 inch crocheted doily at the neck of the hanger, overlapping to the back slightly. Place the rose on the 6 inch doily and pin. Use a needle and thread to secure the rose and the doily to the shabby chic jewelry holder.

I've seen plenty of doilies in the thrift store. This craft is a great way to transform them.
