Shady Area Dress Up

Marlyn Lopes
It's that time of year again, as the ground thaws and little specs of color are appearing throughout your yard. As you begin getting your outdoor living space in order, this year, do not forget about the dirt area that never seems to look as well as you would like it to. Your favorite shady area under that tree, is calling for some attention. So, what do you do?

First, start off by trimming some of the lower limbs of the tree. This will give your ground area a little more sun. If you are not knowledgeable of tree pruning, you should enlist a specialist to do this for you. The money you will spend will be well worth it, once you see your yard as you always dreamed it would look.

After all of the tree work is done, you can start to till your ground. This is a fairly simple task. You can purchase a tiller at any local hardware store for a small price. They are available in electric, gas powered and hand powered. Depending on the amount of land you will need to till should be the main concern when buying a tiller. If you only need to do a small area, by all means a hand powered tiller will do the job perfectly.

To till with a handheld tiller all you have to do is push it into the dirt and twist, very simple project. A simple task that even a child can do (with supervision). After the area has been properly cultivated, simply add a fertilizer and the plants of your choice. Be sure when purchasing the plants that you are getting plants that need very minimal amounts of sunlight to thrive properly. There are several types of plants and ground coverings that will look wonderful and add some color to a drab area of your property.

If you want to just have some grass growing under your tree, you can buy grass seed that is for shady areas of your yard. The prices are reasonable and the seed generally grows very well. To get your grass seed to grow in thick and green follow some of these simple tips and you will soon have a great seating area under your tree.

Again, you will want to cultivate the soil and do it well. After you have done this lay down your shade grass seed. The next thing is add some fertilizer to the area, this will give it added incentive to grow. If your area reaches extreme temperatures, it might be a wise choice for you to also lay some straw on top of your grass seed. This will keep the seeds from drying out and becoming burnt if the sun does reach the area for any length of time.

After you have fertilized the shady area in your yard, water well, then fertilize the rest of your yard. This will give the yard an even growth rate. Your grass should look as if it has all been grown together and be very close to the same length when it is time for mowing. Following these simple steps should prove to be not only simple but also beautiful, especially when your friends and family members comment on the new look of your yard.
