Shady Maple Farms® Stroopwafels (Maple and Organic) Review

While Gouda cheese maybe well-known to North Americans as the cheese from Holland, to Netherlanders or the Dutch what the city and region of Gouda is equally known for, if not more so, is its stroopwafels! If you've never had a stroopwafel, you haven't lived. Yes! They're that good! While you can get them fresh and hot all over the place in the Netherlands, in the U.S. it takes a little bit of searching. Though, once you've had them, the search will be nothing to you. In any case, you can get them from Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and a smattering of other places-including Wegmans. Wegmans carries Shady Maple FarmsĀ® Certified Organic Maple Stroopwafels, which are presented in a beautiful, sturdy, box.

Citadelle, which is a cooperative of maple syrup producers based in Quebec, Canada, and the world's leading producers of maple products, are the makers of Shady Maple Farms Certified Organic Maple Stroopwafels. These stroopwafels stack against any stroopwafels, except for getting stroopwafels fresh from the baker somewhere in Holland. Nevertheless, they are that good! Plus, they're organic to boot.

Ingredients: organic wheat flour, organic palm oil, organic rice syrup, organic cane sugar, organic whole wheat flour, organic soy flour, organic molasses, sea salt, organic soy lecithin, organic spices, organic maple sugar, sodium bicarbonate, natural flavor.

What's really great about Citadelle and Shady Maple Farms is the decision to use organic soy lecithin rather than use what most companies use, hexane-tainted soy lecithin. Hexane is a neurotoxin used in the process of producing soy lecithin for food manufacturers. Hexane residue travels to many, many, kitchen tables, and is especially toxic to young children and infants. Still, it's a neurotoxin to adults, as well.

Back to the happy side of the street, stroopwafels are so popular to the Dutch and visitors to the Netherlands, the stroopwafel is the single best-selling food item at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. While I've only had the opportunity to spend a long weekend in Amsterdam and a couple of other places in the Netherlands, the lil' lady has spent weeks on end there, all the while eating stroopwafels!

If you're the great many who can't get enough of this humbly began ( they were originally made from bakery leftover crumbs) baker's treat, you'll notice the difference between what flavors and sweetens Shady Maple Farms Organic Stroopwafels and how most all other stroopwafels are flavored and sweetened-maple sugar to caramel-like syrup. Don't let that phase you, as I'm sure hardly anyone who eats stroopwafels would allow it. Try Shady Maple Farms Organic Stroopwafels: they're every bit as good as caramel-like syrup filled stroopwafels.
