For years I have been struggling with asthma and allergies. Ever since I was a child I have had issues with my breathing and sneezing. I think that my asthma has gotten worse over the years. In the past 10 years I have been to more asthma/allergy specialists than I can remember. Each time I go all they do is put me on a top of medications that actually make me feel worse. That is until a friend of mine recommended I try Dr. Atul Shah located in Shirley, NY. She has been going there for treatment for her allergies and has had great results. I figured it was worth a try.

When I called to make my appointment I was pleasantly surprised that the receptionist was extremely friendly and was able to fit my on a Saturday the next week. Usually you have to wait forever to get an appointment with a specialist, especially on a Saturday. She said it wasn't a problem and to be there by 9:30 to fill out paperwork.

So Saturday comes and I go to my first appointment. As soon as I walked into the center I was happy. The waiting room was clean, their were plenty of chairs to sit it, the TV was on, and their were magazines I could read while I waited. I signed myself in and started filling out the paperwork. After I handed the receptionist my medical insurance information and all the completed paperwork, I took a seat and waited. Unfortunately I was disappointed with how long I had to wait. I had a 9:30 appointment and wasn't called in until almost 10:30. That seemed strange to me since I didn't see that many people waiting before me.

Once I was called in I was brought to an examining room. Here again I was pleasantly surprised to see how big the exam room was. There were two chairs to sit in plus the medical chair the patient sits in. The room was extremely clean and organized. I chose not to sit in the medical chair, just a regular chair. Within 5 minutes a woman came in and she introduced herself as the PA (Physician Assistant). She was great. She was so friendly and really listened to my explanation of why I was there. She must have asked me a thousand questions about my medical history and wrote down everything I told her. I was so impressed with her. She even apologized for the long wait outside. She explained that it is never like this and they were double booked because the children were coming in sick and they wanted to make sure they were ok for the weekend. I thought that was great. I have a son myself and definitely would have appreciated that if I had to bring him to get treated.

After she wrote down all of my medical history she had me blow into a machine that registered my breathing capabilities. It turned out that I was only breathing half of what I should be taking in. 64 out of 100 was not good. After this test was done, she left and the doctor came in. He introduced himself and shook my hand. We spoke about who recommend I come see him and he started his exam. He ended up putting me on a nebulizer to get my breathing under control. After the treatment was finished I blew into the machine again and was up to a 94 out of 100. I honestly couldn't believe that I wasn't getting enough air. That was a huge shock.

The doctor came back in and we spoke about what treatment to start me on. He wanted me to come back in two weeks to reassess my breathing situation and make sure the medication was the correct dosage and if not, he would readjust it. He wanted to hold off on any allergy testing that day since my asthma was acting up. He said that we would address the allergy part after the asthma part was under control. I felt very comfortable with that decision.

The PA came back in and gave me samples and new prescriptions of the medications that I should start taking. She even gave me coupons. She apologized again for all of the waiting that I had to do earlier. I couldn't believe how nice everyone was in the office.

When I left I felt so satisfied that my asthma problem was going to finally get under control. I can't begin to tell you how difficult it is day by day to deal with asthma issues. I was relieved to think that I finally might have found a doctor who will listen and treat my asthma correctly.

I highly recommend the allergy/asthma center located in Shirley, NY. They have a huge parking lot so you don't have to worry about trying to find a parking spot. They are conveniently located right on William Floyd Parkway exit 58 South of Sunrise Highway. They are about 1 mile past the Home Depot on the right. You can contact them at (631) 395-5464.
