Shaken Baby Syndrome

Shaken Baby Syndrome is the cause of 15% of deaths among children and it is suspected in another 15% of deaths where a child is involved. These statics are too high, and should never happen, yet they do.

Some estimates reveal that 600 to 1400 cases of shaken baby syndrome occur on a yearly basis. This abuse occurs in newborn infants to children up to four years of age according to the website don't shake Jake. Research from the University of North Carolina reported on at the web site modern mom reveals that as many as 1,200 cases of shaken baby syndrome occur each year. Statistics differ from study to study because there is no national clearinghouse to track the numbers. Those numbers are too high ad we must all do our part to eradicate this crime against innocent children.

When people hear the words shaken baby syndrome they imagine someone violently shaking a baby, but it can involve anytime of rough or violent activity with a baby that can result in injury. Throwing a baby across the room or onto a bed can result in injuries as it shakes their brain. These injuries cause damage to the brain of the child as well as broken bones.

When the shaking occurs, the brain is violently sloshed around inside the skull and this causes the immature blood vessels to break away. When these blood vessels break, blood pools in the area between the skull and the brain and this is how doctors can tell that a baby has been shaken. That old blood can lay there in that space for months. The presence of this blood causes the lasting damage to the brain.

Brain injuries can cause mental retardation, cerebral palsy, blindness, seizures, learning disabilities, back problems and many more that affect the entire life of the baby. In some cases the baby dies. Shaken baby syndrome is a crime, and it is punishable by law enforcement officials, usually the person who does it gets a free ticket to the prison for a few years.

The website Shaken Baby Syndrome reports that one out of every four babies who experience this type of blatant abuse die while the others seem to have serious injuries that require hospitalization and in some case life time care. Eighty percent of the abusers are males and sixty percent of shaken babies are infant boys.

The Shaken Baby Coalition web site has plenty of other statistics and information for interested people. This is also a web site for parents to share their photos and stories of what happen to their child who is the victim of SBS.
