Shakespeare in the Park in Dallas

Ruth Eshbaugh
In the cool of the evening as the sun fades and a gentle breeze rustles the nearby trees, people begins to gather at Samuel Grand Park in Dallas to experience a night of the Bard. Since 1972 Shakespeare in the Park has performed to theater size crowds of Dallas residence who are willing to lend a careful ear to the old language and step into another time and place. For me it was magical.

With a gathering of friends, a cooler and spread of food to remember, we laid our blankets out, chatted and caught up while we waited for the play to begin. That year it was Two Gentlemen of Verona, a romantic comedy full of twists and turns.

We had among us a diverse group of people ranging from 13 to 70 years of age who all found the play engaging. We were able to celebrate the 13 year olds' birthday with a cake and song while we waited for the night to begin.

What I enjoyed most was the use of the stage which was sparse and left the audience to fill in the detail but allowed for smooth transition from act to act. All seemed well thought out and gave a modern feel to the lively performance.

The Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre allows for an intimate gathering of viewers. There are refreshment to purchase, but you can bring you own. Italian gelato is their specialty.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10.00 for adults. Advanced tickets get you in the gate at 7:00 p.m. If you wait to purchase tickets at the gate you cannot enter the Amphitheatre until 7:30. The performance starts at 8:15 p.m.

Lawn chairs are allowed but those with backs higher than 16 inches are restricted to sitting in the back. Chairs can be rented at the concession stand too. There are group rates for groups of ten or more. There are two attended parking lots that cost $5.00 to park in.
