Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream: Films, Plays, Novels and Other Adaptions of the Romantic Comedy

A Midsummer Night's Dream (Love and a Bit with a Donkey): 2004. Adapted by Stuart Draper. The pairing ups have been swapped, turning the film into a same-sex love story. Helena and Hermia are in love but Hermia's father wants her to marry Demetrius, who has recently broken off with Lysander. When Hermia and Helena decide to elope, the boys pursue them into the forest. Titania is a washed up and regal drag queen. It was a very interesting adaptation. I would like to see it again, I think.

Draper has also done "Two Gay Gentleman of Verona".

A Midsummer Nights Dreamtime: An adaption retooled to be set in the Australian outback.

Revenge of the Amazons: I do not know all that much about this version, save that it appears to be some sort of sequel and carries the tagline: "What will happen to Oberon after Titania drugs him, and he wakes in the clutches of a reminist theatre group?"

Dream Country: A graphic novel adaption by Neil Gaiman. This was an issue of The Sandman series, and involved a tale of Morpheus comissioning the play as proof of Shakespeare's genius. The play is first performed in front of the faerie creatures who appear in it, and the worlds of reality and faerie begin to merge even more.

There is another issue of Sandman wherein Dream meets Shakespeare during the writing/performing of The Tempest.

Shakespeare Re:Told IV: During an engagement party thrown by Theo and Polly for their daughter Hermia and James, Hermia's true love Xander shows up. After Hermia declares her engagement to James is off, it becomes clear that her best friend Helena has been in love with James all along. When the feuding King and Queen of the Fairies decide to straighten things out with a love potion, their meddling goes terribly wrong and the relationships between all those involved become even murkier than they were.

There is also a Shakespeare Re:Told version of MacBeth that takes place in a restaurant.

A Midsummer Night's Rave: Life begins when the sun goes down for a group of party-prone friends attending an L.A. rave. The friends are Elena, Damon, Mia and Xander. Puck, a partygoer, gives them each a sample of his new "love potion", which seems to be something similar to ecstasy. At any rate, it fuels their inner desires and allows the friends to connect with their long secret loves during the night of dancing, lights, and unadulterated fun.

Pyramus and Thisbe: A comic recording of the scene performed by The Beatles.

A Midsummer Night's Gene: A science fiction parody of the play. Written by Andrew Harmon.

The Sims 2: In Veronaville, a family of characters is clearly based on the characters of the play.

xxxHolic -A Midsummer's Night Dream: An anime adaption of the play.

Lexx-A Midsummer's Nightmare: Stan and Kai take Xev's dead body down to the feast of Morgath because Uther vaguely promised that the dead could be risen. There, Oberon recognises the Red Fool, and The Dark Man, and dominates the proceedings; attempting to marry Xev for 1500 years. Kai is turned into a joyful singing tree. Xev refuses Oberon, so he turns to Stan, who also refuses him. Titania saves them by tricking Oberon into marrying her/him for eternity.

A Midsummer Night's Scream: At Globe University, romance is not going smoothly. Lenore likes Dmitri who likes Mia who likes Zander who also likes Mia. When these couples are paired off for a summer school "parenting" assignment, trouble is on the rise. And then, a carnival rolls into town. The mysterious carnival-boasting sideshow freaks like the Wolf Boy, the Human Torso, and the seductive Lizard Woman attract the bored and unhappy college kids like the lurid purple glow of fresh cotton candy. But more than harmless chills and thrills are in store for the gang as dark occult forces mess with their minds, turning true love into murderous hate.

The same author, David Bergantino, has written other Shakespeare/horror adaptions, such as Hamlet II: Ophelia's Revenge.
