Shakira Wins Four Grammys and Builds School in Colombia
Shakira Dominates Grammys and Shakes it for Charity Too
The Colombian singer and Latina phenomenon was nominated for five and took home four awards this year, among them "Album of the Year" for Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 and song of the year for her steamy collaboration with Alejandro Sanz, "La Tortura." She also won for best female pop vocal album.
She tore up the stage with Sanz, opening the show with a performance of their hit "La Tortura." Shakira held the crowd in awe, captivating the audience with her voice and swiveling her way around the stage.
And she's shakin' it for charity too.
The hip-shaking international superstar is so proud of her roots that she is putting very much-needed money into the impoverished areas of her native country Colombia and of her hometown of Barranquilla.
She says, "I never want to forget where I come from. I'm very proud to be Colombian and very proud of my city Barranquilla."
Shakira's Oral Fixation world tour will be visiting her hometown on November 15th of this year, and she is donating the proceeds from the concert to build an arts school for 1,800 children that have been forced to leave their homes in the midst of Colombia's civil war.
Tickets to the concert are priced starting as low as 7 dollars.
The English and Spanish speaking school will bear the name of Shakira's Pies Descalzos ("Bare Feet") foundation, from which it will receive the majority of its funding, and focus largely on arts education. The school will be built in La Playa, a poor suburb of the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla where almost half of the 21,500 residents are minors.
The inhabitants of La Playa are among the estimated 3 million people whose lives have been drastically displaced by more than 50 years of armed fighters, rebels, paramilitary, and army troops. The fighting between left-wing rebels and government forces in Colombia kills more then 3,500 people every year.
The school will open in 2008 and has already received the approval of education authorities. It is being designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly, who is also credited with having designed New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center complex.

Post a CommentI think it's nice what she's doing with the school, and everything else Piez Descalzos does.
