Share Classic Sesame Street with Your Children with Sesame Street Old School

Kelly Herdrich
I grew up loving Sesame Street. I've tried to find the best Sesame Street videos to share in small doses with my young children. I've hunted down classic Sesame Street books on eBay and in second hand book shops. Last year, though, I was filled with excitement at the release of Sesame Street Old School Volume 1 (1969-1974). With the release of Sesame Street Old School, I was able to share episodes from the first 5 seasons of Sesame Street with my children, as well as relive a little of my own childhood in the process. In fact, I highly recommend Sesame Street Old School for families, as the timeless classics presented in them are even better than I remember from my childhood.

Sesame Street Old School was released in 2006, and includes the hour long season premiere episode from each of the first 5 seasons. In addition, there are highlights from the first 5 seasons, including classic songs such as Rubber Ducky, and visits from special guests stars such as Lena Horne and Bill Cosby. The shows are as wonderful as I remember from my childhood, including puppets, the familiar adults, many of whom are still on Sesame Street today, and favorite characters who have become synonymous with Sesame Street--Big Bird, Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, and Grover. The consistency between the characters and stories means that even my three year old daughter was able to follow along and say, "Oh Mommy, there's Grover!"

Not only are the episodes still entertaining and educational for children, but if an adult ever watched the show as a child, they can appreciate the changes that have come about in the series through the years. The DVD box set comes with a booklet giving interesting tidbits from Sesame Street's history. Adults will have a chuckle at Oscar the Grouch, who was orange in the first season and the three Gordons you'll get to meet while they searched for the right actor! Return to the days when Snuffleupagus was still only visible to Big Bird, and everyone else thought he was an imaginary friend. See Mr. Hooper again, working behind the counter of his store. These interesting factoids make Sesame Street Old School fun for even adults to watch.

Sesame Street Old School Volume 1 (1969-1974) is a wonderful way to share the Sesame Street of your childhood with children. These classic episodes prove to be timeless, entertaining children and adults alike, just as they did when the revolutionized television and children's educational programming. At $24.99, Sesame Street Old School is worth every penny.

I'm so glad they came out with this because, although the new Sesame Street is still great for the kids, I find myself wanting to see Sesame Street how it used to be and share that with the kids. Now I can. :-)
