Share the Joy of Spring Flowers

Julia Bodeeb
Flowers are beloved by most people. The colors and scents of flowers bring a primal joy to life. If you love flowers, perhaps you may want to share that joy with some other people this spring. There are many ways to use flowers to do a good deed.

Donate Flowers after an Event

Many events use flowers to decorate for the special occasion. So if you have a wedding or other special event, you may want to donate the flowers after the event. The organization called Flower Power accepts donated flowers and then makes them into new arrangements to donate to hospitals and to the elderly. To learn how to donate flowers go to the website of Flower Power go here.

Donate Flowers to Nursing Homes

During the spring months it is a wonderful good deed to donate some plants that flower to nursing homes. Many patients are too frail to spend much time outside. Thus donating flowering plants for patient rooms is a wonderful way to share the joy of spring time.

Plants like hyacinths will bring some color and scent to a room at a nursing home. Geraniums are also colorful and bloom profusely. Take a few minutes to donate some flowers to brighten someone's day.

Donate Art to a Hospital

Donate a painting or photograph showing flowers in bloom to a hospital as a good deed. Donating a piece of art to hang in a hallway or patient room at a hospital is a lovely way to give the gift of spring to someone who is ill.

I once volunteered at a hospital that had ongoing art shows in the hallway. It was lovely to walk down the hall and see paintings and photos of nature. So, you may want to think about donating a piece of art to a hospital. Looking at art of nature is relaxing for hospital patients. Seeing a picture of painting of a beautiful scene from nature will help them feel less stressed over being in a hospital.

Donate Packs of Flower Seeds to Schools

Give the gift of gardening to a class of students. If you like to garden, perhaps you would also enjoy donating seeds to a school so student can do some gardening over summer vacation.

Summer projects are always fun for kids. If they get seeds from school they could grow flowers in a garden or in a planter on a porch. Gardening is a positive hobby that helps kids learn how to enjoy nature.

Plant a Garden

Many people love flowers but are not physically able to garden any more. It would be a wonderful good deed to plant some flower bulbs for them. The bulbs will bloom each year. Thus for just a little time invested the person you give the garden to will have flowers for years to come. Some cheerful flowers to plant include daffodils and tulips.

Ask friends and family if they know anyone elderly who would like some flowers planted. Then get some bulbs and create a good deed flower garden for someone.

I am looking forward to seeing the first daffodils of spring in my corner of The Bronx! And yes, it is a great idea to donate wedding flowers and other arrangements to hospitals and nursing homes.
