Shared Parenting: Letting Your Spouse Help Take Care of the Baby

S. Ann
Taking care of a baby is a big job. During the first few weeks after you give birth, you will not really be able to get much sleep especially if your baby happens to be one of those babies that cries a lot at night. Since you are still recovering from the rigors of childbirth, it would be a good idea to let your husband take some of the loads off from you by letting husband take care of the every now and then. The good news is, most husbands would like to be involved with the care of the baby so you may find little resistance when you ask your husband to help you take care of you baby.

One of the first jobs that you can give to your husband is to let the baby sleep while you get some rest and recover your strength. Although men may feel inadequate when it comes to putting babies to sleep, most men would easily learn how to do the job. In fact, there are many men who can put babies to sleep better that some women so do not doubt your husband's ability to put your baby to sleep.

If you have rocking chair, let your husband sit on the rocking comfortable before you give him the baby. It would be easier for your husband to hold the baby securely if he is sitting down. Since he will need the rocking chair to put the baby to sleep, it would be a good idea to give him the baby while he is sitting in the rocking chair.

The next job that you can give to your husband is to ask him to change the clothes of the baby and the nappies every now and then. Your husband may find changing nappies a bit repulsive in the beginning but with some training, he will soon get used to the job. However, when your husband changes nappies for the first, it will be good idea to stay close and help him out. Things could get a little rowdy when the baby starts crying a kicking around so be ready to rescue your baby and your husband.

Aside from changing diapers and putting the baby to sleep, you can ask your husband to feed the baby. If you are breastfeeding your baby, your husband may not be involved in the feeding process but once your baby starts to eat some solid food during the fourth to sixth month, you husband can now start helping you feed you baby.
