"The Office SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure feature must be activated at the site collection level before the Publishing feature can be activated"
When I try to enable this "Office SharePoint Server Publishing feature" I then get the following error message:
"One or more features must be turned on before this feature can be activated"
So what the heck is the deal and how did I solve this? There are a few steps you must take in SharePoint 2007 to get the feature to properly work. In this guide I will explain why you are getting these errors and how I fixed my problem.
When you try to activate the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure feature, there are other features you must enable first at the Site Collection Level (these features take precedence over your site level features). You have to start at the top level with the features and work your way down to your site, so first you have to enable the features at Site Collection Level then at your Site Feature Level. Sounds more confusing than it really is, so if you are trying to enable the SSPI feature follow these steps:
1 - Open the SharePoint 2007 Website (make sure you are a site collection admin for the site)
2 - Click Site Actions Button
3 - Click Site Settings Option
4 - Click Site Collection Features (under Site Collection Administration Options)
5 - Click Activate Button for Office SharePoint Server Enterprise Site Collection features
6 - Click Activate Button for Office SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure
This is the first level of activation required, it is at the Site Collection Level, and you will only be able to enable these features if you are a site collection administrator. Once you have enabled the features here then you will need to enable the final feature on your specific site that needs the feature. Now in order to activate the Office SharePoint Server Publishing features follow these steps:
1 - Open the SharePoint 2007 Website (make sure you are a site collection admin for the site)
2 - Click Site Actions Button
3 - Click Site Settings Option
4 - Click Site Features (under Site Administration Options)
5 - Click Activate Button for Office SharePoint Server Publishing
Once you have activated the feature without any errors you are done, you should now be able to use the features you just activated. SharePoint 2007 is a very powerful tool and has a lot of functionality which is really nice to use. It sometimes is a pain to figure out how to turn on some of these functions.
Well I hope you are able to get rid of the error "One or more features must be turned on before this feature can be activated"
