Sharing is Caring: A New Approach to Going Green

Missy Slink
You probably grew up hearing your mother or first grade teacher constantly reminding you and your siblings (or classmates) that "sharing is caring." While this quaint saying is typically applied to situations involving a limited number of building blocks or train cars and a mass amount of six year olds, it still has truth to apply to the adult world. More specifically, "sharing is caring" is a motto that can be readily adopted by all who wish to embrace a greener lifestyle, and thus lead more environmentally responsible practices. Here are three easy ways to apply the principle of sharing to creating a greener world.

1. Carpool: Perhaps the best know of these sharing methods, carpooling is a great way to cut down your emission of harmful fumes and thus reduce your carbon footprint. The addition of carpool lanes to crowded interstates is a great incentive to driving with several buddies to work, as well as the reduced cost of fuel expenses resulting from a shared gas tank input. If your city has a reliable mass transit system (such as a subway or bus system), then check out these options for alternatives to carpooling. Your sharing of a vehicle with a few (or many) other passengers will reduce the number of cars on the road and the amount of pollution in the air, creating a greener world for everyone.

2. Split it: Many restaurant patrons don't actually consume their entire meal when dining out, and while some opt for a carry-out box, many more simply leave the remains of their dishes to be thrown away. Even though this food waste is technically biodegradable (and perhaps not a the most crucial concern in the long run), it still is amassed with other waste items in landfills today. Cut down on your dining out bill, calorie intake, and food waste by simply ordering an entrée to share at a restaurant. If you and your dining partner are hearty eaters, consider also purchasing an appetizer or dessert in addition to your main meal. You'll be more likely to consume all of both items that you share rather then if you were to purchase two separate meals.

3. Pass it down: Hand-me-downs, while not always the most fun for the youngest child, are actually a great, green way to approach family apparel shopping. Falling into the category of "re-using," sharing clothing with younger siblings and friends will keep these items out of landfills and serving their initial purpose-keeping people warm.

As you live your life, remember that sharing your meal, vehicle, and clothing with others can actually be translated as caring for your environment. Through small lifestyle changes like these, it is possible to create a cleaner, greener world for future generations to enjoy fully.
