In the local 6 Internet report, the shrimp boat's captain Roger Schmall said that the shrimp boat was attacked by the bull sharks for four days before an estimated 14 foot bull shark disabled the boat, the Christy Nichole. With the Christy Nichole and crew adrift 100 miles offshore, Captain radioed for help and was assisted by another vessel about two hours later. Captain Schmall is reported to have stayed aboard the Christy Nichole attempting to save the vessel. Captain Schmall lost his battle with the rising water and the Christy Nichole was lost to the sea.
Captain Schmall and his crew of two, were rescued by friend and fellow fisherman, Captain Henry Gore aboard the Uncle Henry shrimp boat at 5:30 am on January 25th as reported by News-Press.com.
Sharks are a common sight for shrimpers as they cull their by-catch. The by-catch, fish of no commercial value, attract sharks by the dozens as it is thrown over board. Having sharks bump the fishing boat and metal running gear is not uncommon. Typically these attacks are short lived. Having a boat of any size be damaged to point of sinking is an extremely rare occurrence. Thankfully the crew of the Christy Nichole was rescued before the sinking.
The Christy Nichole valued at $165,000 along with Captain Schmall's personal effects were lost. The veteran of 26 years of shrimping related to Pedro Morales, reporter for news-press, that he might never shrimp again. As a charter captain I know that such a decision is never taken lightly.
