Sharpton Shunned by Rap Moguls

Lorraine Hayden
With Al Sharpton being very vocal against the negative lyrics in rap music on the heels of the Don Imus controversy, it is rumored that Universal Music Group demanded that its $15,000 donation to Sharpton's event at New York City's Sheraton Hotel be returned after he canceled plans to give an award to L.A. Reid of Def Jam, a Universal label. Reid was to receive The James Brown award, named after the soul singer who passed away last Christmas. A representative for Universal basically said the company has no negative feelings towards Sharpton and he also denied that the company asked for the donation back.

The National Action Network event was to honor L.A. Reid of Def Jam which is a Universal company with rap artist such as Ludacris sign to it. Also in protest Def Jam founder Russell Simmons canceled his appearance at the $10,000 a table event. Mr. Simmons denies this claim. The New York Post quotes Simmons saying "My credit with the rev is good,"

Russell Simmons has plans of his own to address the issues within rap music through his own Hip Hop Summit Action Network that include board members such as Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Kevin Liles, Damon Dash, Sean Combs and Jermaine Dupree.

Sharpton's response to the backlash was that he does not care if Simmons and Universal pull their financial backing. Sharpton's efforts in cleaning up the misogynistic lyrics in rap music is something that is long over due and I for one is glad that the issue is a priority on his agenda.

With these two "Networks" in place it seems the leaders have different views on handling rap music. They both have to find common ground if the want to succeed with their goals regarding the rap music industry.

The National Action Network event which started yesterday continues through Saturday will feature former President Bill Clinton as a guest speaker today.

Great article! I enjoyed. I think Al has a right to have his opinion. We all do. :-)

I think rap lyrics are becoming more silly and people are running out of ideas...seems every new single just throws a random object in there and that will be the new dance move/action/or slang for the week...do the clap, then the whistle, now tweeting at the candy shop, and snizzle for dizzles

Nice Article, I agree the networks should work together on a common purpose...uplifting and elevating the community.

They should put more focus on his fight against these types of things, and less on what could be construed as plain race issues. Great article.
