Sharrif Floyd, Ronald Powell and Matt Elam Commit to Florida Gators 2010 Class
The Florida Gators Just Brought in One of the Best Defensive Classes We Have Seen
Taking just a brief look at these players, Sharrif Floyd is the top ranked defensive tackle coming out high school, Ronald Powell is the top ranked weak side defensive end, and Matt Elam is the second ranked safety. Gerald Christian plays linebacker and tight end, and comes in as the second highest ranked tight end, and then Jaylen Watkins enters as the 8th ranked defensive back, but also comes from Florida so he could be a quick fan favorite. With five players that are now committed to Florida that bring with them extremely strong high school resumes, it is time to once again fear what the Florida Gators could be able to do on defense for the next four years of having these kids on the team.
The 2010 U.S. Army All American Bowl was the showcase for several of these kids choosing to attend Florida, and you can't help but wonder if some of them based their decision on the other ones declaring themselves committed to Florida. Sharrif Floyd is a huge 6'3" and 300 pound defensive tackle that can bench a max of 400 pounds and squat a max of 500 pounds. He will probably be a force as a freshman for Florida. Ronald Powell is also a really strong defensive end, who posts a 4.52 second 40-yard dash, as well as the ability to squat a max of 495 pounds. The 37 inch vertical that Powell brings with him will also mean that he could be knocking down a ton of passes in 2010 and beyond. To Powell's credit, he also posted a 1380 SAT score that shows he is also strong in the classroom.
The defensive class of superstars for the Florida Gators is unlike anything I have seen coming into a college football season before, and if even a couple of these players can be ready to go in game one of next season as freshmen, then they are going to simply improve an already good Florida defense. It seems that by Urban Meyer deciding that he would remain in Florida to help out the team that he has continued to bring in the blue chip prospects looking to win a college national championship, and this makes it feel like the SEC may be able to keep the streak of national championships going over a couple of years. If all of these players pan out, this could turn into one of the best defensive teams college football has seen in quite some time.
