Shawty Lo's Solo Debut, Units in the Streets

The Reviewer
Shawty Lo is an Atlanta, Georgia-based rapper. He is also the founder of the hip-hop group D4L, which produced the hip-hop hits Laffy Taffy and Betcha Can't Do It Like Me. While Fabo may have been the most visible member of D4L, Shawty Lo is first to go solo on his debut solo album, Units In The Streets. Will Shawty Lo be able to capitalize on the success of D4L on his debut solo album?

The first single off of Units In The Streets is the incredibly catchy Dey Know. The song is definitely one of the biggest hip hop tracks out right now. The Balis Beats produced track is incredibly catchy and samples Mandrill's Children Of The Sun. The song is so popular is has its own trademark dance.

The second single off the album is Dunn Dunn. The track is not as catchy as Dey Know yet it is a proper second single. Fans of Dey Know will definitely appreciate Dunn Dunn as it is somewhat similar.

Got Em 4 The Lo features Gucci Mane and Stuntman. The song features a beat which is fairly similar to D4L's biggest hit Laffy Taffy. The song just lacks the catchiness of Laffy Taffy.

Foolish has that epic hip-hop sound that is popularized by artists like Young Jeezy. The track was produced by Drumma Boy and the song is just very solid. The beat is very catchy and the lyrics work on a simplistic level.

That's Shawty Lo is definitely the kind of track you would expect from a current southern rapper. The song features a chorus sung by a group of kids and a simplistic melody which is very sing-song in its nature.

Feels Good To Be Here is a simple song melodically; however the song is very deep lyrically. The song tells the story of Shawty Lo and is very introspective.

GA Lottery is another simple track however it just does not have the catchiness or the connectivity of some of the other tracks on the album.

Let's Get It is another catchy hip hop track. The song features a simplistic beat and simplistic lyrics however the track is just appealing to the ears. The song features rapper Yola.

Life My Life features lush piano parts over an otherwise sparse beat. The song is definitely not what you would expect from Shawty Lo and that makes the track a success. The song also features Kool Ace doing a vocal interpretation of the John Cougar Mellencamp classic song Jack & Diane.

Units In The Streets is a fairly solid hip-hop album. Fans of songs like Dey Know will definitely not be disappointed. Units In The Streets gets 7.5 out of 10 stars. If you are a fan of Shawty Lo, make sure you pick up his debut solo album Units In The Streets when it is available in stores on February 26.
