Sheek Louch's Silverback Gorilla: Commercial Appeal with Hip-Hop Purism

The Reviewer
Sheek Louch is one of the founding members of the hip-hop group The LOX. Along with fellow members Jadakiss and Styles P, Sheek Louch has quite a following among hip-hop purists. After two previous solo albums, Sheek is back with his latest solo effort, Silverback Gorilla. Will Silverback Gorilla be able to keep up the legacy of The LOX?

The first single off of Silverback Gorilla is the Red Spyda produced Good Love. The song is definitely not what you expect from Sheek. The song is much more commercial than anything previously released. The song is catchy and features an infectious beat.

The second single is Keep Pushin' featuring Mike Smith. The song is definitely harder than the first single yet still has a commercial edge. Sheek shows that he is still a very solid lyricist on the track and the chorus delivered by Mike Smith is solid.

D-Block-Dipset is a posse cut featuring D-Block members Styles P and Jadakiss along with Dipset members Jim Jones and Hell Rell. The song is definitely an interesting collaboration between members of various posses. The song will definitely excite hip hop heads.

Think We Got A Problem features The Game and Bun-B. All three rappers on the track deliver very strong verses and the beat is just catchy enough to add to the whole appeal.

We Comin' features DJ Unk. This is definitely a harder track than expected since DJ Unk is primarily known for Walk It Out. This is definitely not a club banger.

Gettin' Stronger features Styles P and Jadakiss. It is always refreshing to hear the whole LOX together on one track and on the track each member of the LOX delivers their best.

Rubber Grip features Fat Joe and Styles P. The song is definitely harder than some of the more commercial tracks on the album and appeals to the LOX's legendary street credibility.

Go Hoodlums will definitely be a street anthem. The song will never have radio appeal but will appeal to Sheek's fan base.

On Silverback Gorilla, Sheek Louch changes his style just enough to be accepted commercially. However, fans of the LOX and Sheek Louch will not be disappointed as he does not forget what made him. Silverback Gorilla gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Sheek Louch, make sure you pick up his new album Silverback Gorilla when it is available in stores on March 18th.
